How to survive the writer's strike of 2023
Financial resources and ideas for industry people who are effected by the strike.
While the WGA strike is definitely effecting the writers, the ripple effect on cast, crew and vendors is huge. This strike could last longer than anyone wants and then projects will still get delayed due to casting.
Below, I have listed some areas to focus on during this unique time.
Keep Creating. Don’t STOP telling stories. Now is the best time to write, develop, film or create that personal project you have been putting off for a while.
Take care of your mental health. Call a friend, take routine walks and if you can afford it take that vacation you have been putting off for years.
Focus on your finances.
Unemployment is available, and you should apply if you have been working for a company in the last year or two as an employee. (I have not listed any links because this is based on the state you reside in.)
Relief Grants On June 28, 2023, the Directors Guild of Foundation (DGF) announced the creation of the DGA Emergency Relief Fund to aid members facing financial crisis. In addition the this relief fund, the Motion Picture and Television Fund (MPTF), offers assistance and care to those in the motion picture and television industries and their families, including temporary financial assistance, case management, and residential living, as well as the Samuel Goldwyn Jr. Center for Behavioral Health, specializing in adults over 55 with acute mental health needs. Another option to consider is The Entertainment Community Fund (formerly The Actors Fund) and the critical programs and services it provides to DGA members and the industry community.
Loans – A cornerstone since the DGA Foundation’s inception, this program helps DGA members facing short-term financial hardship with interest-free loans.
Side Hustles - Whether you already have one or are just getting started, side hustles can be a great way to supplement income during a slow season. Check out The Side Hustle Show to get ideas on what you might be able to get going.
